- Entrants must be able to provide a UK address and pay entry fees by sterling cheque or postal order. Minimum age is 15 years (concessions for under-18s).
- Entries must be the original, unpublished, work of the entrant and must not have won any previous national award or be entered for any other current competition. No material should be submitted that might be considered libellous, racist, blasphemous or otherwise offensive.
- The awards are for an open-theme short story, maximum 2000 words, and an open-theme flash fiction story of 100 words exactly, excluding title. Hyphenated words count as one. You may enter either or both sections. Please note childrens stories, articles and poetry are excluded.
- TWO copies of each entry are required. Entries must be clearly typed, in English, in double or 1.5 line spacing on one side only of white A4 paper. Please ensure the title appears at the top of the first page of your story (even if you have a title page). Please number pages and staple. No Folders or paper clips please.
- Names and addresses of entrants must NOT appear on manuscripts but should be clearly shown on the entry form.
- Competitors may send any number of entries provided that the appropriate fee is enclosed: short stories £7.00 for one entry and £5.00 for each subsequent entry, £3 under-18s entry; flash fiction £3.00 per entry. Cheques should be made payable to Legend Writing Award.
- The closing date is 31st August 2010.
- The decision of the judging panel is final.
- Prizes for short stories: 1st £500, 2nd £250, 3rd £100, runners-up 3 x £50
Additional short story young writer prizes: £50, £30, £20 (for entrants aged 15-17 as at 31.08.10) Prizes for flash fiction: 1st £50, 2nd £30, 3rd £20, runners-up 3 x £10 Please note no competitor may win more than one prize per section, but may win in both.
- Prizewinners will be notified by mid-November and invited to a presentation evening to be held in Hastings in December.
- Results will be notified on this website early in the new year or can be posted if a stamped addressed envelope marked RESULTS is enclosed.
- Please ensure correct postage is affixed as we are unable to pay any excess charges. Please do NOT send entries by recorded delivery (this could actually delay receipt). Receipt of entries will be acknowledged if a stamped, addressed postcard is enclosed. Please note that no entries can be returned.
- Copyright will remain with the winning authors but acceptance of the prize money will indicate agreement to publication in our Six of the Best anthology, for which there will be no further fee.
- Members of Hastings Writers' Group, or those who have been members during the previous two years are not eligible to enter.
NB: Entries not complying with the above rules and conditions may be disqualified and the entry fee donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital Childrens Charity.
